About J
Born in California, raised in Texas, now living in the mountains of North Carolina, I write fiction inspired by the wonders and absurdities of life. My personal experiences as a physician, researcher and educator inform and strongly influence my fiction.
As a faculty member at
Harvard, Duke and the University of Texas I published almost one hundred nonfiction works: mostly essays, opinion pieces and research articles.
In 2021 I wrote a short story called "Riptide" based my experience as a Vice President in a large healthcare system.
On a lark I submitted it to a fiction writing contest sponsored by the New England Journal of Medicine. When it was chosen as a semi-finalist I had to rethink the judgement passed years earlier by my college creative writing professor, "not everyone can write."
I write daily, participate in a writing group, study craft through coursework and workshops and am well on my way to finishing my second
novel. My short stories have been published in Please See Me and on Medium.
